Surfboard Tail Designs
Squash Tail – This is a great all round tail shape making it one of the most popular tail shapes used today.
The Squash tail offers the surfer a stable ride but at the same time feels loose and responsive. The flat end to the squash tail allows the board to release where the rounded corners to the tail provide more control and bite. Great for any level of surfer and can be used on many styles of board.
Pin Tails- Pintails surfboards are normally use in big wave guns. They are designed to hold in the face of the wave giving maximum control. The compromise of this extra hold and control is that the pintail make a surfboard less maneuverable.
Rounded Pin – The Rounded Pin is halfway between a pintail and round tail. It has a wider curvier outline giving the board more maneuverability than a pintail but still maintains control. This tail shape is commonly used on semi guns short board for use in waves that are head high to double over head.
Square Tail - The square tail is similar to the squash tail, but with more pointed corners that create more bite but with less release.
Round Tail - Essentially a fuller rounded pin tail or fuller squash tail wqith a disinct rounded end, without a point. Smooths out turns, good for funboards, or short small wave boards. More area in the tail. Not as loose as squash tails.
Swallow Tail – The swallow tail allows the shaper to make a board with a wider tail that still maneuverable, which makes them a popular choices when building fish and small wave boards. The two points of the swallow tail act almost like two smaller pintails infect turning on one or the other depending on the rail the board is turning on.
Bat Tail – The Bat tail is one of the more modern tail shapes. It works similar to the swallow tail and performs in a similar way. With it extra center point the bat tail adds a bit more stability.
Rocket Tail - it looks like rocket tail, with two points between a bat tail. Helps the rear channels flute off the tail without interference.
